چکیده

Entropy is a concept that was derived in the nineteenth century during the study of thermodynamic systems. Entropy exists in all systems, nonliving and living, that possess free energy for doing work. As system energy declines, entropy increases. Entropy has precise mathematical and statistical definitions, but can be approximately defined as the degree of disorder or uncertainty in a system. If a system is isolated, or cut off from all inputs of matter and energy, it will tend toward a maximum, according to the Second Law of Thermodynamics. Entropy is important for the study of life support systems because it offers a valuable way of defining and measuring sustainable systems. A sustainable system must, by definition, ensure that its entropy level does not rise to the maximum, as maximum entropy is tantamount to system death. To be sustainable, the system must have life support subsystems that can ensure supplies of matter, free energy, and information sufficient to maintain entropy levels below the maximum.

Comparison of entropy generation minimization principle and entransy theory in optimal design of thermal systems

In this study, the relationship among the concepts of entropy generation rate, entransy theory, and generalized thermal resistance to the optimal design of thermal systems is discussed. The equations of entropy and entransy rates are compared and their implications for optimization of conductive heat transfer are analyzed. The theoretical analyses show that based on entropy generation minimizat...

Boundary Maintenance in Living Systems Theory and Social Entropy Theory

Past analyses of social systems have too often relied upon obsolete dualities such as open system/closed system. The purpose of this paper is to provide a more comprehensive analysis of the full range of boundary-maintenance operations that are at work in the modern complex social system. I first analyze the role of the boundary in Living Systems Theory, and then turn to the analysis and compar...

Some properties of the parametric relative operator entropy

The notion of entropy was introduced by Clausius in 1850, and some of the main steps towards the consolidation of the concept were taken by Boltzmann and Gibbs. Since then several extensions and reformulations have been developed in various disciplines with motivations and applications in different subjects, such as statistical mechanics, information theory, and dynamical systems. Fujii and Kam...

Regional Evaluation of Hydrometric Monitoring Stations through Using Entropy Theory

Proper design and operation of monitoring systems for water resources management is one of themost important issues of water quality and quantity and accuracy and adequacy of data. The properevaluation of these data has a determining role in the correctand consistent decisions in the areacovered by the system. Therefore, determining proper distribution and number of monitoringnetwork stations a...
